HMP Northumberland is near the village of Acklington, The nearest town is Morpeth (12 miles south of the prison). The nearest city is Newcastle Upon Tyne (27 miles south of the prison).

Getting here by car

The postcode is NE65 9XG for those using sat-nav. The prison is 6 miles off the A1 road, but is not signposted off it. Visitors need to take the turning which is marked with the road signs for Amble (A1068), Acklington, Widdrington & Chevington Moor.

The prison can also be reached by the A19 and the A189 /A1068 coastal spine road travelling from the south.

There is ample free parking at the prison and a small number of disabled parking spaces for visitors who have the appropriate badges.

 

Getting here by bus

The prison can be reached by the X18 Arriva bus service which runs hourly from the Newcastle Haymarket bus station. It also runs from Berwick in the north via Alnwick Bus Station.

This service runs to the turning circle at the entrance road of the prison, approximately 300 metres walk from the Visitor Centre.

Getting here by train

The nearest mainline train station is Newcastle, with regular East Coast services running from Edinburgh in the north and Darlington, York, Doncaster and London from the south.

There is also some East Coast services stopping at Alnmouth (8 miles north of the prison) and Morpeth (12 miles south).

Visitors can then book a taxi from these small stations to the prison. The X18 bus service also runs close to the stations but does not call at them.
